Jon Stewart’s gripping, passionate directing debut tells the story of an Iranian journalist arrested for treason only days after appearing on The Daily Show.
In 2009 Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari was arrested for treason, based on such “evidence” as his participation in a segment of The Daily Show only days before. He was interrogated and tortured for 118 days by a man who smelled of roses. Jon Stewart’s directing debut tells Bahari’s story with a dynamic combination of humor, political commentary and a focus on the pursuit of truth. A. O. Scott says, “Mr. Stewart, the world’s leading fake newscaster, turns out to be a real filmmaker.” D: Jon Stewart, US, 2014, 103m
