A dryly amusing mockumentary from the Kiwis behind the similarly deadpan Eagle vs Shark and Flight of the Conchords, Shadows unfolds like the darkest movie that Christopher Guest never made (#DeliciousNecks)!

Housemates Viago (kind killer), Deacon (ladies man) and Vladislav (brooding dork) are three vampires who are trying to get by in today’s world. From paying rent and doing housework to trying to get invited into nightclubs, they’re just like anyone else—except they’re immortal and must feast on human blood. When their 8000-year-old roommate Petyr turns 20-something human hipster Nick into a vampire, the guys must guide him through his newfound eternal life. In return, Nick teaches them a thing or two about modern society, fashion, technology and the internet.

Mixing high-concept with lowbrow, this charming faux-verité spoof indulges in all manner of silly sight gags (Viago’s habit of biting the wrong artery is priceless) and tragicomic laments. Vladislav succinctly articulates their predicament as he sighs: “With humans, there is a tendency to die.” D: Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi, NZ, 2014, 86m
