Walter Cunningham is a larger-than-life local celebrity who fills every room he walks into with his contagious energy and passion. But there’s more to Walt than his winning smile.

For this reason, Professor Jeffrey Ruoff chose Walt Cunningham as the subject for the spring FILM 39: Group Documentary course. Eleven students have worked together over the term to direct, shoot, edit and produce this short (30m) biopic. The film focuses on Walt’s 1970s childhood in Iowa, his education at West Point in the 1990s, and his subsequent career shift from corporate sales to conducting the gospel choir at Dartmouth. The theme running through these three stages is, of course, Walt’s ongoing love of music.

Introducing...Walt Cunningham also includes footage from Walt’s 50th birthday party in Florida three weeks ago as well as clips of the Gospel Choir and the 2015 Dartmouth Idol finals.

Hop Film and the Department of Film and Media Studies present two public screenings of the final class project. The evening consists of the short biopic (30m) and a Q&A with Walt and the filmmakers after each screening. (approx. 75m)
