The Digital Lab in the Black Family Visual Arts Center, first floor, offers students the opportunity to learn about working with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, etc., and other photo/video editing software in addition to receiving help on projects.
The Digital Lab is online this term!
To aid in the education of everyone who wants to learn and use digital art and media softwares,regardless of computer processing power or ability to access costly software, workshops duringthis term will be on free or freemium software.
Workshops will occur on various days of the week from 5:30PM to 7:30PM EST, unless otherwise posted. To register, please send Jess an email to obtain the Zoom meeting ID and password.
In advance of the workshop please have the program downloaded and installed to facilitatelearning right from the beginning of the workshop! If you have some time, play around with theinterface to become more familiar with it, though we will cover the basics of the interface.
Darktable - Thursday, April 2, 2020
Darktable is an open source photography software for both organization and editing of photos, for both raw and compressed image formats. We'll cover the basic interface and how touse the editing tools and export images.
DaVinci Resolve Monday, April 6, 2020
DaVinci Resolve is a freemium software, where you can access and use the software for free, but there are certain advanced components that require the paid studio package. We will be covering the interface of the program, as well as the basic video editing workflow, transitions,and we'll lightly touch color correcting, before learning how to export the final video.
GIMP Tuesday April 14, 2020
GIMP is an open source raster based editing that can do photo editing as well as digital drawingand painting. We'll cover the interface, then move on to both creating digital art from scratch and editing photographs.

Inkscape is an open source vector software that allows you to make beautiful logos and other vector designs. We'll learn the interface and how to make unique vector designs.
Blender for 3D Modeling Monday, April 27, 2020
Blender is a powerful open source software for 3D modeling and animation, and has been used to create anything from a model for 3D printing to award winning short films. In this workshop we'll look at the interface and how to make and manipulate 3D objects, as well as building complex shapes.
Blender for Animation Tuesday, May 5, 2020
Blender can be used for animation, both in 3D and 2D as well. We'll scratch the surface on both of these types of animation. It would be ideal to be comfortable with the Blender interface, but having knowledge of other 3D modeling softwares may be sufficient.

Audacity is an open source audio editing software that can handle recording as well. We'll talk about ideal recording scenarios, and then how to edit audio that wasn't recorded in such ideal circumstances to reduce noise and make the audio as clear as possible.

Scribus is an open source page layout program that is useful for making lovely PDFs and can be used for pamphlet, magazine, and booklet production! We'll look at the interface and lay outsome text and images.
Adobe Illustrator Tuesday, January 7th - 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.
We'll get to know the Illustrator interface, as well as learn how to create and edit vector shapes, work with strokes and fills, patterns, effects, import images, and finally how to save and export your vectors.

We'll get to know the interface, as well as learn how to create and edit vector shapes, change color, work with some effects, import images, create artwork, save and export.
Tuesday, October 15, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Intro to Premiere Pro
An overview of Adobe Premiere Pro, we'll touch on skills needed to organize footage, begin editing, work with production sound, and add color correction and effects.
Wednesday, October 23 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Illustrator for Laser Cutting
We'll discuss how to use the popular vector software to create physical works, including what even is a laser cutter and what can it do? How does your work flow change? What are some pitfalls and traps to watch out for?
Tuesday, October 29, 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Intro to Photoshop
We'll get to know the interface, as well as learn how to work with layers, remove backgrounds, change colors and brushes, import images and manipulate them, save and export your artwork!
Wednesday, November 6, 12:50 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. Surface Pattern Design
All of the patterns you see on clothes, furniture, wallpaper, buses, (and more!) were designed by someone, and the category that falls into is surface pattern design. Come make your own repeat design, and learn how to make repeat patterns in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Thursday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Intro to InDesign
Learn how to use InDesign to layout manuals, theses, or pamphlets in an organized and cohesive way. We'll go over the basics of how to use the interface, then delve deeper into some of the tools that make it a great thing to use for text setting.
