[more]By MARGARETTE NELSON AND JESSICA ZISKCHEOctober 15, 2014 *Originally published in The Dartmouth As if an imaginary fist from behind the frame had punched through the foil of Jack Whitten’s “Birmingham 1964” (1964), a hole appears like an artifact of violence, a documentation of the civil rights movement. The hole is a window, offering a view of an old newspaper photo. A stocking mesh prevents a clear view of the image.
